Chapter 1 · Before and After

Before this journey began, life felt predictable, comfortable, and steady. I wasn’t extraordinary, just a regular person who found joy in simple things. Family dinners, weekend hikes, workouts at the gym, table tennis at the local club, and quiet evenings reading about philosophy and science filled my days with satisfaction and peace. I was grateful for good health and a happy family. As a Silicon Valley startup entrepreneur, I enjoyed technology and building companies with great products. I never imagined that an ordinary afternoon at the gym would soon split my life into two parts: before and after.

This simple divide, before and after, is how I’ve come to think of my journey. Not in terms of loss, but in terms of awareness. Life before cancer was lived with a certain momentum, a rhythm built on confidence and consistency. Life after cancer? It was an awakening. An invitation to slow down, look deeper, and live more intentionally.

And the truth is, even in the face of a diagnosis like mine, I never had a breakdown. I didn’t collapse under fear or despair. I didn’t ask, “Why me?” I’ve always had spiritual grounding, a naturally optimistic mindset, and a firm belief in the power of resilience. I don’t let negative thoughts take root, and that made all the difference.

It was May 2019, a bright, uneventful day. I wrapped up work at the office and headed to the gym like I usually did. Table tennis was more than a hobby; it was a form of exercise and relaxation for me. The back-and-forth rhythm, the sharp focus, the joy of movement—all of it gave me clarity and presence.

But that day, something was off. My timing was weird. I missed easy shots. My balance felt strange, and I couldn’t quite get into the usual flow. I told myself it was just one of those days—low energy, not focusing on the game. Perhaps my vision was getting blurry because of aging. But a small voice in the back of my mind said otherwise.
